A Celebration for the Universally Flattering Midi

A dress has been a woman’s uniform for centuries. Whether it be a religious or cultural influence (or both), it wasn’t feminine or appropriate for a woman to wear anything less than a maxi dress with long sleeves. As time progressed, our fashion norms progressed as well. Now, the variations on what a woman “can” wear are virtually endless.

Long gone are the days of wearing conservative maxi dresses until you die. In 2021 you can wear anything: a minidress, a strapless maxi dress, or my favorite – a midi dress.

I always assumed midi dresses were reserved for tall people. I’m 5’3” so until a couple years ago I resigned myself to the not-midi-dress-capable category; Frankly, I felt left out. Then one day I saw a form-fitting knit/spandex skirt at Aritzia on clearance. At the time, I had never purchased or worn anything that tight, but it was so cute! And on clearance! I bought it despite my reservations.

    And I fell in love!

The great thing about that skirt and midi length clothing in general is they’re universally flattering! They give a woman’s body that nice hourglass shape by guiding your eye from the narrower waist to the full thighs then a tapered hem. It’s perfect for every body!

Also no matter your height, it works. A midi’s hem hits at the perfect point on your shin to be a lil conservative and a lil sexy.

The Aritzia skirt I bought definitely gives all sexy since it’s so tight, but for a lot of other midi pieces you don’t need it to be tight to be sexy. The hem does that job for you by adding the right amount of reveal without being too much. This makes it the perfect piece to wear for every occasion from a date night to a work meeting.

While anyone can pull of a midi dress or skirt, I will say for us short people: Wear heels. Yes you can wear flats and still pull the dress/skirt off fabulously, but if you want to wow, just add a few inches.
