What’s a Top-Handle Bag?
I define a top-handle bag as one that needs to be held. I don’t consider most shoulder bags top-handles since you can hold or sling them over your shoulder.
In my opinion, this hold-in-hand characteristic makes a top-handle only work for short distances and specific outfits. In short: They’re a lot of effort. (I’m currently favoring crossbody bags since I can carry them in multiple ways; I have a lot to carry!)
But, I love top-handle bags. It’s the perfect topper for a cute outfit, the perfect small celebratory piece. While it may be a bit of a chore to carry it, it’s like any accessory: a little unnecessary, but ultimately worth it.
The History of Top-Handles
Top handle bags have been around for centuries, but they really hit their stride in the 50s and 60s, when fashion icons like Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly made them must-haves. These stylish bags were originally designed as travel bags, and their sturdy architecture made them perfect for carrying essentials on long journeys.
Later on, they became a symbol of elegance and sophistication, famously seen on the arms of the fashionable elite. In recent years, top handle bags have made a comeback, with designers reimagining them in different sizes, shapes, and materials. Today, they’re worn by anybody who wants to add a touch of classic glamour to their outfit, whether it’s a sleek leather tote, a quirky acrylic purse, or a chic mini bag.
