Vacation Outfit Planning is No Joke

My partner and I recently made a trip to St. Lucia. So of course I planned my outfits out for it months in advance.

The trip was for his good friend’s wedding and I needed a dress for the wedding, an outfit for a boat ride and something else for a farewell brunch. That’s a lot to consider! I had multiple notes devoted to the task of planning for this vacation.

In the process of planning and buying clothes for St. Lucia, I was actually prompted me to be more conscious about my apparel buying habits and curb them.

In sum: I realized style isn’t about the amount of different clothes I own, but how I use what I have.

This perspective shifted my priorities from buying all new items to finding some new items to mix with my tried-and-true pieces. I intend to take more steps like this to reduce wasteful fashion habits and only purchase items that will last for many years.

Unfortunately, I came to that epiphany after I bought mostly new items for the Caribbean. But there’s one piece I will never regret purchasing: my boat ride outfit!

The Nike Sportswear Icon Clash dress

At the time I fell in love with this dress, I was unaware of the injustice Nike factory workers face in unpaid wages from the company.

I wasn’t aware of Nike’s crimes at the time I was considering buying the dress so I bought it. It’s kind of unfortunate how much I enjoy wearing it.. As an eco-conscious customer I’d rather wear what I have than buy something new or throw it away. For the purposes of my vacation, this dress was perfect. Although it was intended only for the boat ride, I wanted to wear it everywhere and for everything!

Nike Black and White Houndstooth Midi Dress

It’s such a gorgeous dress it’s unfortunate the brand isn’t meeting their ethical standards at the level it should. They’re notorious for not paying their outsourced factory workers and not guaranteeing safety standards overseas. I acknowledge their egregious acts and recognize this will be my final Nike purchase until they right their injustices.

That being said, once again, it’s unfortunate that I love this dress. It’s a beautiful midi made of breathable polyester/spandex with a black and white houndstooth print all over.

The only pop of color is the small embroidered logo in orange/red right at the center of the neckline; this offered the perfect opportunity for some matching orange heels!

I love the way this dress lies on my body. It settles on curves nicely and it feels so light! I could attend an event on a boat or play a round of tennis in this thing – the former I actually did.

The shoes I matched the dress with were from Ego and they’re some of my favorites! They’re a beautiful, bright orange color – the perfect statement shoe for spring/summer outfits. They also happened to be the exact color to match the logo on the midi dress!

I write this post with mixed emotions. While I wore the dress I was ecstatic, but learning of Nike’s injustices sours my experience of it.

I can’t help enjoying the fit, style and feel of this dress. In the same way that deserves recognition, Nike’s wrongdoings must be acknowledged as well.

Only then can we be conscious consumers and apply our learnings to support other brands who produce clothes ethically.

Nike’s values are in question so I don’t plan on purchasing any more of their products until I see change from them. It just happened to be that the last Nike purchase I made is now one of my favorite dresses in my closet.

This houndstooth midi is a classic wardrobe staple that I intend on wearing many times in the future. Hopefully by then I’ll be proud again to sport the Nike logo.
