The Power of Accessorizing
Sometimes I don’t want to put too much effort into my outfit. I’ll have days full of errands during which I’m not interested in looking the most fashionable.
Just the most functional.
On these busy days, I’m looking for an easy upgrade to a somewhat boring outfit. Often, that takes the shape in a statement necklace.
That can also look like the perfect bag or hat. Whatever is easy to throw on, but makes me look exponentially more put-together.
The below items are my go-to’s for better outfit building. They are what I call wardrobe must-haves.
What defines them as wardrobe must-haves is their ability to instantly elevate any look. They’re all inexpensive and time-effective elements.
And they can make even the most uninteresting outfit a little more chic!
#3: Chunky Silver Chain Necklace
I got this necklace as part of a set from Nasty Gal ~7 years ago. It originally came with a couple other chain necklaces in varying sizes. I’m not entirely sure what happened to the other ones and I don’t really care since I chose my favorite long ago.
I throw this necklace on whenever I don’t know or don’t care to think about accessorizing an outfit. It works for every top: t-shirts, crop tops, crepe floral print blouses, EVERYTHING.
It adds edge to really girly prints and it adds a chic vibe to plain t shirts. I’d argue this necklace is my most versatile piece of jewelry (rings not included).
#2: Studded Flat Slides
These slides have become my go-to shoes. I live in Minneapolis so obviously the time for open-toed sandals is limited, but the last couple months of wearing these has been blissful.
I got these from Ego Shoes for like $8 and I didn’t expect to enjoy them as much as I do. They’re bright and unique and comfortable. Plus they save so much time!
On those days you’re running late and you don’t have time to catalog your shoes in reference to your outfit, these shoes are godsends. You throw them on and get your ass out the door!
#1: My Favorite Leather Jacket
I talked a bit of sh*t about this jacket in another post because I feel I’ve worn the life out of it. Nevertheless, my sh*t-talking doesn’t deter from this jacket being one of my best purchases ever.
I got this from Zara about 3 years ago on sale for $70. At the time I was really conflicted about buying it since I technically didn’t need it. But I couldn’t pass on the great price or exceptional fit. So I bought it. And I thank myself for that every day 😌
To me, something only qualifies as a wardrobe must-have if it’s simple. Simplicity lends itself to both versatility and longevity: They succeed in being must-haves because they last so long and do so much.
A chain necklace adds a layer of complexity to a floral print, a leather jacket adds edge to joggers.
These must-haves saved me many times and to them I am forever fond. Which elements of your closet have done the same for you?
