What is The Hype?
The Hype is a reality competition series on HBO Max. It features 10 rising streetwear designers who compete in weekly challenges for some amazing prizes: pieces of their collection sold on NET-A-PORTER and StockX, $150,000, and co-signs from respected names in the fashion industry.
If the rewards don’t impress you, the co-signers aka judges will! Bephie Birkett, Marni Senofonte and Offset guide, inspire and grade the contestants every week. All three have valuable insights on the intersection between streetwear and luxury fashion.
The Hype truly is the first of its kind. The first fashion competition reality series about streetwear. Its originality is matched by its impressive guest list. Notably Dapper Dan, Johnny Hundreds, Cardi B, Law Roach and many more.
The Hype premiered in 2021 and has since released another season this year. We hope it renews every year! No other show celebrates street style similarly.
Post-Hype Cravings
Every time I finish a season of The Hype I yearn for more luxury streetwear. I of course want to own nearly every piece designed on the show. However, that’s not feasible so I placate myself by finding other streetwear brands instead.
Sometimes these other brands are actually those of the designers featured on the show. Often, they’re not. Either way, I’m drawn to them because they share similar features as the criteria judges look for on The Hype.
Good streetwear makes a statement of the pedestrian. It needs to be fashionable, functional and luxe in an understated way.
