Chanel and Louis Vuitton have some of the most popular and covetable bags in the world. A Classic Flap or Neverfull symbolizes more than a means of carrying supplies. These bags popularly represent status and wealth – Their prices reflect that.
Both brands are known for upping their prices in an effort to retain exclusivity, accommodate for market changes and (let’s be honest) make even more shmoney. However, 2021 was a record year in that Chanel increased their prices not once, not twice, but THREE times; They say bags are scarce thus their prices must reflect their rarity.
Given this shocking decision, the question becomes whether we want to keep participating in this pricing game. Yes, everything inevitably gets more expensive over time (e.g. Right now furniture prices are increasing rapidly because supply can’t reach demand that’s coming from overseas) But I find it concerning to be at Chanel and Louis Vuitton’s mercy. If there were 3 price increases this year, will it be 4 increases in 2022?
