A Shift for Style Files

    It’s Been a Long Time

Dear reader, how are you? Have you been taking care of yourself? Are you finding more joy in your life? Are you avoiding fast fashion brands? 🙂

I hope all the responses are positive and yes, but I understand if that isn’t the case. Life gets in the way of making plans whether it be for your closet or your joy… Anyway the fact that I’m asking now is what’s significant. Because it’s been a while since my last post – about 8 months.

The reason for the delay is I struggled with how well I was maintaining Style Files for its original purpose. See, I started Style Files as a resource to put more intention into shopping.

The site would feature a Brand Directory that only highlighted ethical and sustainable brands. Posts would promote ethical fashion buying, clothing maintenance and textile recycling habits. Its intent was also to introduce you to new designers and offer new ways to consider your closet.

Unfortunately, I strayed from that purpose. Instead of keeping the posts related to ethical shopping and sustainable fashion habits, I introduced more… interpretative approaches to fashion buying. Namely the Shopping List posts.

To be clear, the intent of the Shopping List posts were to offer ethical/sustainable options for a specific item. For example, if you’re looking for a beach hat, but are used to enlisting the help of fast fashion sites to find one; Style Files would offer a list of sustainably made beach hats that are better alternatives. The intent is for these shopping lists to exist should you need them. But now I see them as tools to promote over-consumption instead.

    I Shouldn’t Have Left You

While the Shopping List posts could be helpful if provided with context, a new visitor only interacting with that single post doesn’t have that background. They see a Shopping List as yet another list of items they’re coerced into buying. And I don’t want Style Files to be another site promoting unnecessary purchasing.

I want Style Files to return to its original purpose of being a resource to maintain what you have and explore new ways to approach your closet. In that vein, Style Files will no longer be known for its shopping lists. Instead it will be a leader in intentional fashion education, from buying gently used to maintaining for decades. I’m declaring today the official shift for Style Files and I welcome you all to witness its evolution!

Without a Dope Site to Reference

I’m also declaring the end of me trying to maintain these site headers to the tune of “Try Again” by Aaliyah. It kinda worked in the beginning, but now they really don’t make sense…

Nevertheless, I am getting up and trying again. I started Style Files almost 3 years ago and I’m grateful to be here now so clear in what it will become. I look forward to providing you all with the kind of articles that will enrich your relationship with clothes. And I look forward to learning more about what I enjoy every day.

    Thank you for reading.
